Beautiful California, how I miss you every day. Your beaches, your warm weather, and all of your of vegan food options. This week, I’ll be traveling home from France to see my family for the holidays. Not only am I excited to see them, but I’m just as excited to indulge in some vegan delicacies that France doesn’t have just quite yet. Here are the five vegan things from America that should not be taken for granted. YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE:
Vegan Things From America
TofuTofu isn’t a huge deal in France as compared to how widespread it is back in the states. The French tend to use vegetable-based alternatives compared to soy which is better for your overall health but sometimes, tofu-steaks seem to really call your name. You can, however, find tofu in France by going to specialty Asian supermarkets if your city has one. If. Black BeansUnfortunately, after searching far and wide, I have yet to find one of my favorite staples anywhere in France. Les haricots roses, or pinto beans, have already been a struggle to find, and although rare, they do exist here. As for black beans, you will just have to do without. Vegan MarshmallowsMarshmallows are already near non-existent in France. They can only be found in the “American” food section of supermarkets and not only are they very pricey, but they are also filled with gelatin which is a big no-no for vegans. Stores including Trader Joe’s offer these delicious, fluffy bundles of joy which are animal-friendly (in case you didn’t know) and I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t miss a having hot cup of cocoa with vegan marshmallows in the Winter. Taco BellTaco Bell is hands down one of my favorite vegan things from America, that I simply love. We have many major American chains in France with vegan-friendly options including Subways, Domino’s, Starbucks and Loving Hut but unfortunately, none of these places offer crunch wraps or cinnamon twists. I already have my post-flight order planned in my head. Non-Dairy Milk at CafésUnless you are at a specialty vegan café or Starbucks, it’s highly unlikely that non-dairy milk will be an option for your morning coffee in France. Even so, it’s usually only soy milk that is offered as an alternative which I, unfortunately, can’t drink since it’s the only soy product that I’m oddly allergic to. French Starbucks offers coconut milk in addition to soy but in my heart, it could never replace my number one choice of almond milk.
