Guardian columnist, Zoe Williams, has angered not only vegans everywhere, but citizens of India and South East Asia, for their beloved and well enjoyed jackfruit. As the culturally insensitive piece continued, the writer explains her first encounter with the food was in a Starbucks wrap. Showing that unless it is approved in Western Society, it apparently doesnât exist, or couldnât possibly be a well used dish elsewhere.

As Twitter user @castnuri pointed out, not only is the write up offensive to natives of where the fruit is grown, it is culturally unaware of how popular jackfruit actually is. With Susmita Bhattacharya pointing out that it took the food becoming popular in Western society for it to be considered âfashionableâ. While others questioned if the writer has been to India before, casting doubt on the visit. As Huffpost stated, the article â which called the fruit âgross-looking lump of fibreâ with âno taste to speak ofâ â had everyone suitably horrified, but particularly Malayalis. Kerala produces, consumes and sells crores of jackfruit every year. Itâs so widely used, Kerala declared it the stateâs official fruit last year. Guardian suggests there are three ways to eat jackfruit, while Twitter users pointed out, that there are entire festivals dedicated creations by it. Further cementing, that hiring a more culturally diverse team who wonât insult entire nations with limited knowledge could be avoided. Before you jump on the fur baby parenting bandwagon, ask yourself these important questions to know how prepared you are! You might also like:
Ask Yourself These 5 Questions Before Getting Your First Family PetYou’re proud to announce the soon arrival of the newest addition to your family. Is it a girl? A boy? Twins? Well, he has fur and walks on four legs. Introducing your first family pet to your household is a whirlwind of an experience (and I mean this in the absolute best way possible). The journey from deciding your family is ready for a pet, to visiting animals at local shelters, to finally bringing your new fur baby home is one that takes time, careful planning, and an immense amount of time and patience. The payback on having an animal in your family’s life is unbeatable, especially for young children. If you’re in the process of looking to add a new fur baby to your family, here are 5 questions you should ask yourself first to ensure that your household will be prepared for this new arrival. What type of pet fits our lifestyle? There are as many different pet personalities as there are human personalities so it is vital to choose an animal compatible with you and your family’s lifestyles. Whether your family loves camping and hiking, or prefer to stay at home for family time on weekends, choose a pet with a similar energy level as your household. How much time can we realistically make for our pet? Some countries offer “paw-ternity” leave when workers get new pets and it’s for a good reason- having a new animal welcomed into their new home requires a lot of time. If you and your significant other are working full-time and the house is empty for almost the whole day, maybe an energetic, people-loving dog isn’t the best idea. Think about how much time you really can dedicate to the pet for walks, vet appointments, bath time, play time, and so forth. Will I/Can I raise my pet on a vegan or vegetarian diet? Some animals can still thrive on a vegan or vegetarian diet and some simply can not. It is up to you and the veterinary specialist to discuss options as far as diet goes for the new pet to see if it’s possible. If your animal can’t survive on a vegan diet, it may be a sacrifice you have to make in the cat food aisle for the health and livelihood of your beloved pet. Read what a canine nutrition expert has to say over raising dogs on plant based diet. How long is my pet expected to live for?Different animals and breeds of animals have different life expectancy. It differs vastly from animal to animal. It is important to research this before choosing who to adopt. Keep in mind that older animals need love too, not just puppies and kittens. Can our family commit to our pet’s lifespan? As stated above, life expectancy vastly differs and it is important to see that the family is able to commit to take care of an animal for however long they may be around for. If you are unsure about the living situation and maybe making a big move sometime in the future, it is best to hold off until you are settled in the new place to ensure there is sufficient space for the new pet to live and thrive (and that the landlord is alright with animals) Do you have pets? How did you feel while getting your first family pet? What advice do you have for first-time pet owners? Let me know in the comments below. Author Mian Azhar shares a handful of ideas that make the French Press worth every penny you spent over it. Read on to know more⦠You might also like:
7 Unique Uses of a French Press Besides Making CoffeeIt doesnât matter if youâre are a coffee addict or not; you need a French press at your home. It will help you make a whole lot of other stuff, for starters, consider the following: 1. Rinse GrainsIf you use a French Press, you will have no issue rinsing grains like rice, quinoa, and farrow. All you need to do is pour the grains in the carafe and cover it with water. Put the lid on and press plunger down to separate water from grains. Now pour the water out, and your gains will be ready to be cooked as they are clear of the water. 2. Infuse OilsChoose a French press carefully, as you can use it for a lot of other things besides just making coffee. Yes, you can use it to make herb-infused olive oil. You will need some fresh herbs such as rosemary. Cover them with olive oil. Put them in the top and put the Press in the fridge. Keep it there for a few days before you plunger down the whole thing. 3. Rehydrate Dried FoodIf you need to rehydrate any dried food, you donât need anything complicated; your French press will do the trick. Put the dried food inside it and cover it with hot ware. Let the Food rehydrate for a few minutes and press down the plunger to get rid of water. This will rejuvenate your food items. 4. Froth Plant Based MilkYou can easily froth warm plant based milk (we find oat milk works best) with the help of a French press. All you have to do is fill the French press halfway with warm plant based milk and slide your plunger up and down to start frothing. You will need to do this for 30 seconds or until you get the froth you want. You can use this in your morning coffee to make it even better. This is one the most efficient of all the uses of a French Press. 5. Strain Wet FoodsFrozen foods are convenient but they do leave you with extra moisture. If you want to get rid of the extra water, you can use your French press to do so. Just put the thawed product in it and press the plunger carefully. Push it down software and get rid of the excess water. 6. Infuse WaterYou can make great infused water with your French press. All you have to do is add fruit and herbs and cover it with cold filtered water. Once done, put it in your fridge for the whole night and enjoy the next day. You can infuse water with anything you like including fresh mint leaves, strawberries, etc. 7. Fresh HerbsYou should know you can extend the life of herbs if you keep them in a bit of water. You can use the French press for this purpose, add one or two inch of water in the bottom and insert the lid halfway. Now put herbs upright on top of strainer. Now press the plunger down to the bottom of herbs is submerged. You will need to store the whole thing in your fridge. Do you know other uses of a French Press besides these? Comment below. Vegan KFC fired chicken version might be a thing! Although KFC reportedly declined to comment on whether their upcoming vegan offering will be global, yet I am elated that KFC is set to try the same in the UK. The mega fast food retailer is set to try a vegan alternative to one of their famous offerings, and as per announcement, it is as early as by this year’s end. To know more about read on. Vegan KFC Fried Chicken? Your Wish Might Turn True By The End Of The YearThe ‘Zinger Burger’ restaurant chain has very little to do with vegans. But this could change with their latest announcement of entering into the vegan products division by this year’s end. Looks like there has been a lot of foresight in the step taken by KFC. A last year’s report by the Mirror stated that KFC had vowed to reduce calories in their offering by different means. The fast-food chain giant sought to reduce 20% calorie per serving by 2025 alongside revamping its menu. For instance, KFC reportedly was working on their way to offer zero calorie carbonated drink and consequently their trial into the vegan offering. Speaking more about KFC’s entry into trying meat free options, last years a petition was submitted by PETA urging the fast food giant to bring a vegan alternative to their popular product. PETA’s petition gained 12,600 signatures for recreating their famous fried chicken into a plant-friendly iteration. Commenting on the request by vegan campaigners, KFC spokesman told The New York Times in a statement last year, that the development of recipes are yet to mature and the options they’re exploring in the kitchen are still a top secret. But what he said next makes me the happiest. He said, “Once we’ve perfected the recipe, we aim to test with customers this year, and if all goes well, we hope to launch a new vegetarian option in 2019.” It is worth highlighting that despite KFC’s trial into the plant-based chicken, the company reportedly will make sure the ‘Colonel’s secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices’ will be retained. Because as per KFC- “fans absolutely love our Original Recipe chicken.” Victoria Robertson, Head of Food Innovation, UK & Ireland (the impetus behind this trial) said they realize people are more mindful than ever in consuming the choicest foods. KFC faces ‘a big challenge’ in shifting people’s perception of what they offer. She redirected to the success of Riceboxes and said- “(…) we know any new menu and recipe changes will have to be just as tasty as today.” The Fresher CommentsThis year, Jack Hinchcliffe, Innovation Director at KFC spoke about the plans freshly to the Telegraph. He said trend veganism is totally on the rise. The company (KFC) are in their way to develop both vegan and vegetarian options in their innovation kitchen at their head office. Hinchcliffe said: “Veganism as a trend has really blown up. We’re currently in the process of working on both vegetarian and vegan options in the innovation kitchen here in our head office.” He reportedly made it a point to mention how the company would not take any shortcuts in their offering of vegan alternative because they believe it “That lets down vegan” and they seek to offer vegan options what’re “really credible, authentic and genuine.” Now this truly raises we vegan’s appetite! Isn’t it? Millions of chicken meet their end in the conveyers that lead to throat-slitting blades. They live a disastrous life in the dark of the abattoirs where most of them don’t even get a chance to soak a single ray of sun. A lot of mainstream restaurants like KFC are increasingly offering plant-based alternatives. I am excited to see how well KFC pull-off its meat-free commitment. What do you feel about this? Waiting eagerly for the vegan KFC version? Let me know in the comments below. The post Vegan KFC Fried Chicken? Your Wish Might Turn True By The End Of The Year appeared first on Raise Vegan. But this incident has highlighted more than other such cases do. It had proved that a certain extent of legislation and battle over fetal rights (abortion rights) can be obstructive to a healthy resolution. In such an incident involving an abortion, teenage fathersues a clinic and a contraceptive pill manufacturer. But the tale is twisted. Read on to know more. You might also like:
Abortion Rights: Teenage Father Sues A Clinic for Terminating Girlfriend’s Pregnancy Without His ConsentA teenage girl in Alabama, USA found she was six weeks pregnant and didn’t want to keep the child. Opposing her then Boyfriend’s consent she took to a clinic and medically got rid of the fetus. Ryan Magers, the teenage then ‘would be’ father to the unborn child went on to sue the clinic and the pill manufacturer for terminating the pregnancy of his then-girlfriend. But the core of this case lies in the fact, the Alabama attorney recognized the unborn fetus as a person with rights and the court allowed Ryan to sue the clinic- Alabama Women’s Center for Reproductive Alternatives (where his girlfriend got rid of the pregnancy) on behalf of the fetus. The Mirror reported such a case was the first of its kind in the state according to Ryan’s lawyer. One of the most perplexing facts about this case is that the Madison County allowed teenage father Ryan Magers to sue the clinic on behalf of the fetus as well. Madison County Probate Judge- Frank Barger issued a Decree that explicitly stated the suing fetus as “Baby Roe” and allowed plaintiff Ryan Magers to name the unborn child as co-plaintiff in a suit for “wrongful-death,” according to the Washington Post. Magers, in the first place, was able to file a case because of Alabama’s “personhood” law that empowers fetuses with a full set of laws. The incident took place in February 2017 when Magers was 19 years old and his then-girlfriend- 16. Magers was unemployed, and this alarmed the pro-choice activists, reported the Mirror. A Battle that could never Win for any BetterThe incident happened two years ago, but according to Lad bible, Ryan Magers is still fighting on the case because he believes that men should have the right to choose over their unborn baby (if or not baby should be kept) even if the partner doesn’t. “I’m here for the men who actually want to have their baby,” told Ryan Magers to WAAY 31. He went on to say that his whole world as if fell off after knowing his baby won’t survive. He said he believes every baby has the rights to live since it was conceived. And now when there is no way the baby could be returned, he said he is fighting to give voice to future would-be dads who’d find themselves in the same spot as himself. Ryan told- “I just tried to plead with her and plead with her and just talk to her about it and see what I could do, but in the end, there was nothing I could do to change her mind. Even though there’s nothing I can do for the situation I was in, there is something I can do for the future situations for other people,” reported Lad bible. He even mentioned how he tried to change the mind of his’ partner but in vain- “I just tried to plead with her and plead with her and just talk to her about it and see what I could do, but in the end, there was nothing I could do to change her mind.” Lawsuits on abortion rights over unborn babies have never had settling tendency in the US. This case, involving an unborn fetus fighting for its ‘would-have-lived’ rights is first-time in the state. Such cases hint to a blurred future on women and her rights over an unborn child that is still lathed to her body. Women fall prey to mishaps more than men, and any law should not end up causing more weight to any single gender binary over the other. What are your views? Let us know in the comments below. Hormonal Birth Control Awareness: Everything You Need To KnowSo many women use birth control — sometimes not for its intended use but things such as skin problems or heavy periods. However, hormonal birth controlling methods cannot serve as a root solution to these very complex problems and when birth control is stopped these symptoms will come back — sometimes worse than before. Effects of hormonal birth controlSynthetic forms of birth control such as the pill contain artificial hormones progesterone or oestrogen and progesterone. This manipulation of hormones temporarily shuts down our reproductive systems by preventing ovulation consequently preventing you from becoming pregnant. It does a good job at this, but it is also causing damage to our bodies short and long term. Controlling our bodies in this way can have negative effects — research shows that synthetic birth control can cause inflammation, disrupt hormonal and gut health and mess with your mood — it’s hard to believe that a tiny pill or patch can cause this much harm. Many of you will be familiar with the short-term effects of birth control which include headaches, nausea, weight gain and mood swings. If you are using synthetic birth control or have used it in the past, you might have experienced these side effects therefore trying many forms of birth control until you found one that agreed with your body. Those side effects are our bodies way of rejecting these artificial hormones. Other documented side effects include low libido, anxiety, inflammation and autoimmune disease. Post birth control syndromeThese hormonal contraceptive methods can take a serious toll on our bodies and women need support to completely undo the damage they can cause. Post birth control syndrome is a cluster of symptoms that can occur after coming off hormonal contraceptive methods — normally occurring within the first 6 months after coming off hormonal birth control. Symptoms range from hair loss, acne and vaginal infections to depression or total loss of your period. Some people can have all of these symptoms with some women only exhibiting a couple. If you took the pill to treat any symptoms such as headaches or acne, they will come roaring back after you stop taking the pill, this is your body trying to communicate that your body wants you to deal with the root cause of these issues. What to do after coming off birth controlResearch shows that there is a need to restore your body after coming off birth control. These suggested steps include replenishing your nutrients store which has been depleted. Hormonal birth control especially depletes folate which is vital for foetal development — very important if you planning to conceive or are already pregnant! Vitamin C and E are also depleted, these powerful antioxidants protect your brain, ovaries and fight against inflammation, so it is essential their levels are restored! It is advised to take supplements containing these nutrients to replenish your bodies stores. If you think you are suffering from post birth control syndrome you should read ‘Beyond the pill’ by Dr Jolene Brighten Synthetic hormones impact your natural hormone levels including insulin, thyroid hormones and cortisol which are all key in our daily functioning. Signs of a hormone imbalance after stopping birth control include acne, headaches, painful periods and inability to ovulate. It can be beneficial to work with a doctor or Nutritionist to identify your hormone balances, so they can find out where you need to start to feel better! Healing the gut is an important step after stopping birth control. Research suggests that birth control pills may disrupt normal gut flora which creates an environment that allows for the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast. Healing your gut is extra important as your gut plays a role in removing excess hormones. Eating a diet rich in gut healthy foods such as fermented foods will help! Supplements to consider; L-Glutamine and Zinc. Continuing to take birth controlIf birth control is something you need in your life — that is totally OK just try to take vitamin C and E supplements as these vitamins help keep hormones balanced — making it important to take them if you plan on coming off the pill also. Alternatively, you can take a multivitamin which includes iron — lost during menstruation. The post Hormonal Birth Control Awareness: Everything You Need To Know appeared first on Raise Vegan. The Spanish Supreme Court upholds a ban to the inhumane torture on bulls in the mask of celebration. Scroll down to know more. You might also like:
What Happens At The Festival?Tell about this festival to a child, and it will innocently ask you, why? Having been celebrated since the medieval eras, the “Tor de la Vega” festival is a bull festival observed in the town of Tordesillas. During the cruel festival, a bull is chased by men laden on horses with spears armed. The bull is chased through the city and surrounding countryside, relentlessly perusing the animal, and stabbing it mercilessly on the way, until it breaks the sweat and then it is finally stabbed to death. Torture Of Bulls In ‘Toro De La Vega’ Comes To An End“Toro de la Vega” takes place in Spain’s Castilla y León region in September every year, reportedly notwithstanding 74% of Spanish citizen’s (between ages 16-65) opposition in the bull fiesta. Animal rights activists like PETA and others in 2016 breathed a sigh of relief when the regional government of Castilla y León outlawed the stabbing bull festival. But, the celebration (of animal rights activists) was very short lived because as soon the regional government banned the killing fiesta, the Tordesillas City Council filled back an appeal to the apex court of the country defending the decision of outlawing the festival. According to the council, there was no reason to prohibit the bull killing. Outlawing The Torture Of Bulls In ‘Toro De La Vega’ Festival: A Milestone IndeedAfter years of relentless persuasion by animal rights groups like PETA and local Spanish groups like PACMA, and Humane Society International/Europe (HIS), the Spanish Supreme Court reportedly upheld a ban to the appalling festival in the Castilla y León region of Spain, finally. The decision came after the apex court officially ruleed out the appeal of the regional council that defended prohibition of the 500 years old barbaric festival, bringing an end to the horrifying practice. To the horrors of animal lovers, the bull’s tail would be ripped out while the animal is still alive, apart from the darting and spearing, reported PETA. And what is more stupefying, the ultimate killer of the animal would be awarded a ceremonial spear and a medal in the festival. In a statement to Vegan Food & Living, Senior Director of Public Affairs for HSI stated- this (outlawing bullfight) is an ‘important victory.’ He went on to say- “The Spanish Supreme Court has recognized that the medieval ‘tradition’ of allowing a terrified bull to be chased to exhaustion and then stabbed to death by a spear-wielding mob has no place in modern society. We salute our Spanish colleagues who have fought against the backward attempts of Tordesillas Council to reverse an earlier decision to prohibit the public killing of the bull during the annual Toro de la Vega fiesta.” A bullfight Cannot be EntertainmentThat which inflicts inexplicable pain to an animal is hideous. With over hundreds of Spanish town, supported by even more citizen taking a back turn from bullfighting, the barbaric ‘tradition’ is set to end, gradually. This sadly doesn’t imply bulls aren’t tortured in Spain. Bullfight like horse racing is cruel and should not be devised as a festival. A regional outlawing is the beginning of a more significant movement. What do you feel? Are you happy with the ban imposed on the torture of bulls in ‘Toro De La Vega’ festival? Whereas men of age would prefer to cover-up; they’d rather opt not to display the flabbiness of time that shows up on the body. What is that the 70-year old Royal, Prince Charles, do to defy the wrath of time on body, physic rather? Read on to find. You might also like:
Prince Charles And His Regular Meat-Free DaysA Chiseled SeventyTaking a pause from his tour to the Caribbean, the seventy years old royal took to a beach, his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall alongside. And to the shutterbug’s surprise, he was effortlessly similar to his young bod days. How did we know? The prince stripped down to a pair of floral swim shorts on the beach and that revealed his time-defying torso, which is, to say the least, would give a serious challenge to men, many years younger than him. According to the Express UK, his images were strikingly similar to those taken back in 1981 on an Australian beach (he was in his early thirties then). Onlookers and paparazzi alike went bonkers at the prince’s toned structure that is much lesser than his age.
Prince Charles is now in his 70’s implying him as the oldest and longest-serving heir in British history. He visited Barbados last week and there happened the revelation of the trim torso of the royal prince. In fact, his current state of physics is so reversed in time (he looks young) that the media couldn’t but compare him with his “young eligible bachelor” days, said the Daily Express. Again, the royal heir is in his seventies. How he Does that?Well, it is not saying Prince Charles is a vegan and therefore the lean physic. Charles had never publicly spoken of going vegan and there has been no official declaration for the same. But he’s shown concerns for the impact that animal agriculture has on the environment, Plant Based News stated. And it is a fact scientifically proven, plant-based diet is immensely helpful in maintaining proper body weight and muscle mass. Alongside helping to regulating blood sugar. However, this is worth mentioning, Prince Charles does maintain his ‘regular meat-free days’ as a part of his iron schedule which he voluntarily subscribes to. The Daily Mail reported exercise is one part of the story. The Prince reportedly consumes organic food, alongside eating in moderation. He skips a meal (lunch) and what’s more? He has his regular meat-free days. The Royal prince even likes to starve himself from time to time, in order to keep his weight in moderation. Meat-Free and Lean-BodyAssociation of a lean body with plant-based diet is from long. The sole reason being higher content of fiber and lower saturated fats in plant-based foods as they tend to be whole-foods and not processed, mentions the Healthline. Furthermore, saturated fat content is comparatively lower in vegan whole foods compared to non-vegan. We wonder, how more handsome and chiseled Prince would look, had he been a vegan!
