Why are there non-vegan ingredients found in cosmetics?!Have you ever picked up cosmetics in the drug store and thought about what actually goes into making them? Sure they might be labeled as cruelty-free, but that doesn’t mean they don’t contain animal products. A quick google search should be able to tell you if your favorite brand is using non-vegan ingredients in their cosmetics. Some of these ingredients may shock you. 1. CastoreumUsually found in perfumes, and sometimes labeled as just ‘parfum,’ this ingredient is actually a secretion from the anal glands of beavers. Yep, you read that right. Secretions from anal glands. The beavers use this natural secretion to grease their fur and mark their territories. The beavers, unfortunately, can not have these glands removed without being killed to harvest the castoreum. 2. LanolinLanolin comes from sheep’s wool and essentially is like a grease to keep their coats waterproof. It is one of the common non-vegan ingredients found in cosmetics like lip balms, moisturizers, and hair care products. It can also be found in some baby products as it is a source of vitamin D. 3. SqualeneThere are some vegan sources of squalene, generally from olive oil, rice bran oil or yeast, yet this ingredient can also be derived from shark liver oil. It is unfortunately found in a whole range of skincare products including lipsticks, eyeshadow, and sunscreen among others. If you see this on the ingredients for a product, contact the manufacturer to find out if it is one of the non-vegan ingredients found in cosmetics. 4. Cera AlbaThis ingredient is often used under its more recognizable name, beeswax. It is often found in skincare and hair care products. Beeswax is produced by worker bees as a place for them to store their honey, and is an animal by-product so therefore falls under the category of non-vegan ingredients found in cosmetics. 5. ShellacThis secretion of the female lac insects is used in many products such as mascara, hairspray, eyeliner pencils and is often found in nail products. It is used to bind together the other ingredients as it helps to stop emulsions from separating into their respective water and oil-soluble parts. So there you have it. 5 of the most common, and surprising non-vegan ingredients found in cosmetics. Did you know about these? Are there any other ones that we’ve missed? A new Study from scientists at Queens University, Belfast have uncovered a link between processed meat and colorectal cancer. The study explored a link between eating processed meat and colorectal cancer, chemicals used in the processed meats. The research found that the nitrates used in the curing process can release chemicals which increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer, as reported by Digital Journal. Digital Journal explained that the study uncovered a “direct link between nitrates used to produce bacon and dangerous chemicals called nitrosamines.” The nitrosamines have been previously linked to other diseases including gastric and esophageal cancer, diabetes, fatty liver disease, Parkinson’s disease, obesity and Alzheimer’s, in other studies. The curing of these processed meats is intended to slow down the rate of spoilage, with one method of doing this being to add nitrates or nitrites to the food. Digital Journal also commented that these additives have been confirmed as sources of N-nitroso compounds, which are known carcinogens. Professor Chris Elliott, the lead researcher of the study, said that this new research has shown there is a direct link between the nitrates and the formation of nitrosamines, which means there could be a direct link between processed meat and colorectal cancer. He concluded the study by stating: “This means that when people consume bacon – which is currently cured with nitrites in the UK – they could be increasing their risk of contracting cancer.” There is a growing amount of research and evidence linking meats to different types of cancer, and this study linking processed meat to colorectal cancer just adds to the growing pile of reasons people should cut down their intake of meat and other animal products. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has also previously reported the same verdict regarding the increased risk of developing cancer from meats. The organization suggested for every 50g of processed meat consumed on any given day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by roughly 18%. Professor Elliott noted that it would be beneficial for people to cut down their intake of additives, especially from processed meats stating “it is estimated that more than 50 percent of bowel cancer cases are preventable and lifestyle changes such as improved diet could help.” With this new link between processed meat and colorectal cancer will you be encouraging more people to cut back on their consumption of animal products? The range of dairy-free frozen desserts is expanding once again, and this time it’s going to include frozen mousse. So Delicious already have a range of yogurt alternatives, creamers, ice creams and beverages, and now they’re adding to their ever-growing product range. These frozen mousses will come in 300-330 calorie pints, in seven different flavors. The flavors include caramel swirl, mango swirl, strawberry swirl, lemon swirl, peanut butter swirl, cranberry cherry swirl and chocolate chip. Lauren Start, senior brand manager at So Delicious said, “We are really excited about these new pints. There is so much to love; they are shamelessly decadent with 300-330 calories per pint so you can enjoy a serving for dessert and not compromise on taste.”
She added, “In developing frozen mousse, it was important for us to balance the right creamy, light mousse-like texture with indulgent swirls of flavor, all crafted with carefully selected ingredients for a delicious treat that can be enjoyed anytime.” As more and more consumers are choosing to go dairy and meat free, the rise in companies making the switch to plant-based alternatives is growing. Recently IKEA announced it plans to introduce a vegan soft serve ice cream in its stores, Air New Zealand partnered with Impossible Foods to provide the Impossible Burger on its flights, and vegetarian brand Quorn have announced they have invested $9 million in a bid to develop a new ‘bleeding’ vegan burger to compete with the Impossible Burger. With more people embracing the dairy-free trend, the range of plant-based frozen foods keeps growing, which just means we’ll have more to pick from. The move acknowledges the health benefits of a plant-based diet as well as the sustainability benefits. The kids seem to agree, showing enthusiasm for the city’s plan and the new meat-free meals. Carmen Farina, the Schools Chancellor, described it as
De Blasio showed his enthusiasm for the proposed changes. “Cutting back a little on meat will help make our city healthier and our planet stronger for generations to come,” he said last October. Mayor Bill de Blasio also announced that both he and First Lady Chirlane McCray will be taking part in eating vegetarian on Mondays. “Chirlane and I are excited to participate in Meatless Mondays at home, and we thank Borough President Adams for leading the charge behind this healthy and sustainable initiative.” Brooklyn Borough President Adams switched to a plant-based diet after his own experience with type-2 diabetes. Since making the transition, he has become an outspoken advocate for the plant-based diet alongside Mayor Bill de Blasio. Adams showed his support for the Meatless Monday initiative stating that the program has the power to “transform the health of thousands of our city’s students, as well as open the door to a powerful conversation that children can have with families on nutrition and wellness.” Some New York City schools aren’t just giving up meat on Mondays, they’re giving it up altogether. Bergen Elementary School, located in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park, where the Meatless Monday announcement was made, is one of five schools in the city that serves an exclusively vegan menu every day. In the United Kingdom, the Vegan Society is demanding that more plant-based options be available in the public sector. “By public sector canteens, we mean places like hospitals, schools, prisons, universities, workplaces etc. Basically anywhere where you go not out of choice, but because you have to eat.” A spokesperson for the Vegan Society, Dominika Piasecka, explained. “Veganism is protected under human rights and equality law, meaning vegans have the right to suitable, animal-free catering in public sector settings. It’s important to remember a vegan food option isn’t just for vegans – it often constitutes a safe dietary choice for everyone. We encourage people to get in touch with their local council, asking them to influence procurement across the public sector.” The United States and the United Kingdom are not the only countries interested in shifting toward healthier food options. Rio De Janeiro announced a partnership with the Humane Society International (HSI) in early 2018 with the goal to help four cities adopt plant-based meal programs in their schools. The move affects 23 million meals served annually “Providing our school districts with plant-based meals will help save environmental and public financial resources, allow for a future of healthy adults, and build a fair world for the animals,” Leticia Baird, Brazilian public prosecutor for the environment in the state of Bahia, said in a statement. Sandra Lopes, the food policy manager for HSI in Brazil, added: “We applaud the cities of Serrinha, Barroca, Teofilandia, and Biritinga for becoming the world’s first school districts to commit to going 100 percent plant-based. It’s an honor to have worked with city authorities, nutritionists and school cook on the adoption and implementation of this initiative, and we’re excited to continue working closely with them to ensure the success of this program.”

The most affordable foods on the planet are solid staples in a healthy vegan diet, such as grains, beans, seeds, and legumes. The meals you can create from basic staples are always a huge hit and not only save you money but also cooking time, vegetable stir-fries, sandwiches, chili, pasta dishes, curry, and salads. There are a lot of products that can be less affordable such as meat alternatives, vegan cheeses, and specialty items. Save them for a treat and remember that they are not crucial to a healthy diet! Use the guidelines below to save money while consuming a vegan diet. Fresh or Frozen: Affordable ProduceAn easy way to help little ones get the nutrients they need is by making smoothies. Sometimes steamed leafy greens just aren’t as appealing as a fruit and veg smoothie, and this is where we are definitely able to cut costs by purchasing frozen produce. Always compare prices, depending on the season certain fruits and vegetables might be cheaper to purchase fresh versus frozen. When in season and on sale you can easily get stocked up on fresh berries, bananas, or greens and then freeze the excess. Bulk or Packaged?Buying in bulk can save you money – and help your family stay lower waste. If it’s an item that is consistently used in your family’s diet, it will usually benefit you to purchase it in bulk and also help with family meal planning if you always have it on hand. Some foods that are good to get in the bulk section:
Smart ShoppingSchedule Shopping TripsIt can be very easy for us to end up making “a quick trip” to the store every day, which can add up very quickly. By scheduling yourself you can shop smart, like only going once a week you can still get fresh produce and have it last your family until next trip. Another tip you can try is saving your receipts and comparing how much of certain items you purchased and if your family ran out or didn’t use up a certain item, so when you head to the store next round you can make a more tailored shopping list. Compare StoresUse store sales to your benefit, planning this can be a little time consuming, but you can definitely save a lot. If you know the day the sales begin each week, use this to your advantage and get in early to stock up on the items you need. Wholesale MembershipsGetting a membership at a wholesaler can be very worth it, even small families can save a lot of money. If you think you need to test the waters first, try going with a friend who has a membership to give you a good idea if that location will work for your family.
Prep Your Food!Using the tips above, you can take advantage of the affordable vegan food options and create a well-balanced diet for your entire family, Using these foods as the staple in your meals can make a huge difference in your health and wallet. Here are some more tips on minimizing your food waste and staying prepared.
Make Your Own Convenience MealsPreparing your families meals allows you to be aware of exactly what nutrients your children are getting. If you often find yourself needing to pick up premade meals for work or outings, consider buying a lunch bag to bring leftovers from meals you cook each day for lunch. Quorn reported a sales increase of 12% in the first six months of the year and has attributed this growth to the global consumer shift towards more plant-based foods. “All over the world, we have seen a real step-change in the way people are eating. Young consumers are really starting to have concerns about meat from a health and sustainability point of view.” Quorn CEO Kevin Brennan told The Guardian. Quorn expects their brand to reach global sales of $1 billion annually by 2027 if the global meat-free industry keeps its growth at a steady 10-20% per year, and they suspect that developing this new bleeding vegan burger to compete with market giants will help them to reach their goals. Impossible Foods, the creators of the Impossible Burger, has continued to expand its distribution globally, announcing a partnership with Air New Zealand to serve their bleeding vegan burger on their flights. There is an old quote by Henri Matisse that states, “There are always flowers for those who want to see them.” How can we apply this positive mentality to our own, and our children’s, lives? Take, for example, the loss of a job. Whether you have resigned or been laid off, it is a blow to the psyche. You may have thought you were on the path to success, be it climbing the corporate ladder or building your brand, and it can be gut-wrenching to have the carpet torn out from under you. Finding the proverbial flowers in the cracks of the sidewalk is your way to a better tomorrow. Remember that you can, and will, find something better for you in the end. By thinking about what inspires you daily, what brings you the most happiness, you can find out what you are truly meant to do with your life and will help you with staying positive. Passion is the driving force behind business, love, careers, and success. What you thought was your pathway to success may just well turn out to be a dead end, thus forcing you to pivot one hundred and eighty degrees and start anew. The pursuit of happiness, your life’s journey, it all whittles down to one thing, following your heart. By being true to yourself, and following your intuition, you are providing yourself with the best self-care possible. You will be setting an example for your children and encourage them to keep staying positive during their lives. An example to not give up when they make a mistake, to keep trying until their goal is reached, or to know when it’s time to change directions and move on. This can protect your children from:
Never fall victim to circumstance. There is always a bright side to every situation, although it may take a while to figure out just what it is. Take inventory of your life today, and get ready to make some changes, whether minor or major, there is a garden of opportunity awaiting you. Staying positive is not always easy, but it makes the harder points of life so much more manageable.
The post Staying Positive in Trying Times appeared first on Raise Vegan. Via https://raisevegan.com/staying-positive-in-trying-times/ Being a stay at home parent can be very challenging.Whether or not you also have a side business, being the primary caregiver for your children is no joke!
From the moment you… or should I say your child… wakes up, it is go, go, go! There always seems to be an endless list of things to be done; laundry, dishes, sweeping, cleaning the walls, scrubbing the bathtub, grocery shopping, cooking 27 wholesome meals and a day, it just never seems to end. In addition to the chores, we want to give as much attention as we can to our little ones, who are only small for such a short period of time. On top of all of that, there are a bunch of events for your child; swimming lessons, mommy and me gymnastics, story and song time at the library, park play dates and so on. How in the world do you balance all of this, plus still have time for your partner (if you have one), not to mention time for yourself as a stay at home parent!? These tips might help you get some ideas!
The funny thing about kids is, we can plan and schedule and organize as much as we want. But, all of that can just fly right out the window at any given moment! It’s important not to hold yourself to such a high standard, thinking everything must be perfect all of the time just because you’re a stay at home parent. News flash: those supermoms you see on social media have their ‘moments’ as well, it’s not always sunshine and rainbows.
Having some sort of an outline for how you’d like the day to look can be helpful. However, allow yourself to scratch all of that and lay on the floor playing with your kids all day, throwing a quick pot of pasta on as a last minute dinner. Give yourself grace, you’re doing a great job as a stay at home parent. Emily Payan My name is Emily and I live with my amazing husband and beautiful one-year-old daughter in Northern California. A study that ran from when they were children, until now adults, shows that having same-sex parents has no effect on them. Nada. None. Not even a drop. The National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS), who has been studying and following families since they began to plan their families in the 1980’s to the children now as adults themselves – confirmed that the children are doing just swimmingly. Comparing the data to heterosexual couples, the researchers found no differences with respect to “adaptive functioning (family, friends, spouse or partner relationships, and educational or job performance), behavioral or emotional problems, scores on mental health diagnostic scales, or the percentage of participants with a score in the borderline or clinical range.” To sum it up, the kids raised by same-sex parents turned out the same as everyone else. There were some limitations to the study, no members outside of same-sex women in the LGBTQ community participated, and it was not a random sample of people. Racial and economical diversities were also not represented. However, there are plenty of other studies that will support their claims on children being raised by same-sex parents. A 2016 study that did rely on a random sample of same-sex families found that there was no difference in outcomes for the children, even though it did find higher levels of stress in the same-sex couples. The fact that this stress did not translate into less favorable outcomes in the children speaks to the resilience of these families. Another 2016 study included a mix of two-men, two-women, and man-woman couples recruited through five adoption agencies and also collected feedback from the children’s teachers to make sure parents weren’t biasing the results. Researchers found no differences among any of the families based on orientation. One of the world’s largest studies of same-sex families, conducted in Australia, found that the children raised by same-sex couples were actually happier and healthier than their peers.

The post Despite Naysayers, Kids In Longest Study With Same-Sex Parents Just Fine. appeared first on Raise Vegan. Via https://raisevegan.com/despite-naysayers-kids-in-longest-study-with-same-sex-parents-just-fine/ Depression During PregnancyA recent study released from Kings College, London has discovered if depression during pregnancy occurs, it may lead to biological changes in the infant. It is the first study to ever propose that depression during pregnancy, can result in real and long-term changes in the fetus. There are countless studies showing that the mothers mental health during pregnancy does affect the development of the baby, and previous studies have shown that a mother suffering depressing may be an indicator that her offspring may have an increased risk of developing the same later in life. The reasons for it are not known at this time. This emerging study, however, is starting to paint a clearer picture between the parent and child, and the correlation of depression during pregnancy and depression in the child. The study with one hundred participants followed women throughout their pregnancies and twelve months proceeding the birth. Roughly 50% of the participants were diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and the other 50% viewed as a healthy control. Blood and saliva samples were studied for physiological signs relating to depression. Women who had been diagnosed showed higher markers of inflammation in their blood and elevated cortisol levels in the saliva. One area of note is that the women who did suffer from depression went into labor earlier by an average of one week to eight days earlier. Link After BirthThe infants after birth were assessed for regular neonatal behavior, which was used to measure their alertness and response to stimuli. The first set of results showed that children, who were born to mothers suffering from depression, showed slower results than babies born in the healthy control group. Over the course of the next twelve months, at standard vaccination appointments, babies who were born to mothers who suffered from depression, showed larger amounts of cortisol during the injections – leading researchers to believe that they were more sensitive to the stress.
