I’ve never been great at establishing bedtime habits with my children. This is probably the reason why I haven’t slept properly in fifteen years. Every night there’s some kind of issue surrounding bedtime. I usually end up giving in and allowing a kid to sleep next to me. The Four Bs of BedtimeThe four Bs of bedtime is a great option for smoothing the transition into a more comfortable bedtime routine for both parents and children. Bathing.Giving your child a bath before bed is a great way to soothe them. A nightly bath is a great way to separate the daily activities and gives your child the cue that the bedtime routine has started. Brushing.It’s never too early to get your child into the habit of brushing their teeth, and it is extremely important. The earlier you begin, the easier it is to implement. It can be helpful to read books about the subject to get your child used to the idea. Books.Reading to your child at bedtime can provide a great source of comfort for them. Listening to your voice as you read to your child is soothing and can be the perfect cue to your child that it’s almost time to sleep. It is never too early to spark the love of reading. Bedtime.It’s pretty impossible to force a child to fall asleep. If you establish a nightly routine of bathing, brushing, and books, the next step is getting your child to fall asleep independently. Dr. Laura suggests implementing a nightly method to get your child ready and into bed.
