Selfridges Bans The Sale of Exotic Animal SkinsThe high street retailer who first banned the sale of fur back in 2005 has now become the first major department store to ban exotic animal skins. Selfridges are following in the footsteps of many major fashion houses who recently banned the use of exotic animal skins. Victoria Beckham and Chanel are among some of those who have banned the material, with hopefully many more expected to follow their lead. Sebastian Manes, Selfridges buying director, says that Selfridges prides itself on being a responsible retailer and trusted curator of brands and that they will continue to inspire their brands and customers through thoughtful, ethical and transparent buying methods. Humane Society International has welcomed the news that will undoubtedly save the lives of many crocodiles and snakes from needlessly losing their lives. Executive Director of Humane Society International said that more than a decade ago, Selfridges positioned themselves as a retailer at the leading edge of compassionate fashion by banning the sale of fur in their stores and that banning exotic skins is the next natural step for the responsible retailer. Victoria Beckham no longer uses exotic animal skins in her collections. The designer – whose brand was already fur-free – adopted the new policy just before her autumn/winter 2019 collection was shown during London Fashion Week two weeks ago. Beckham is the latest in a string of designers to ban the use of exotic animal skins. Vivienne Westwood, Chanel, and Diane von Furstenberg have all promised not to use exotic animal skins in future collections. Gucci, Burberry, Michael Kors, Versace, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and many more have gone fur-free, and hopefully, they will follow Beckham’s example in the near future.
