So, you go to enjoy a delicious and nutritious plant-based meal and for some reason, you are tasting metal in your mouth. The strength of the taste of metal may vary from woman to woman but it’s still undeniably there. It was found in a study that about 93% of pregnant women experience this. Are you one of them? Keep reading to find out more about why this happens and how you can combat it. You might also like:
Tasting Metal While Pregnant: Why Does it Happen?Dysguesia, also known as the metallic taste in your mouth that you may experience during pregnancy, is one of the symptoms that you may be facing during the first trimester. The taste can vary from simply feeling as if you’re drinking out of a metallic cup to feeling as if you’re actually eating a bowl of coins like it was cereal. Why does this happen? Dysguesia is a side effect of the hormone changes that happen during pregnancy, namely estrogen levels. The increased amount of estrogen can cause your taste buds to change and as all pregnant women know all too well, your tastebuds go haywire while pregnant, especially in the beginning. This also attributes to your sense of smell changing and why certain foods may make you feel sick to your stomach. It’s important to remember that even if eating isn’t as pleasant of an experience as you would like it to be, that it’s vital that you brave through it and manage to eat as many healthy foods and nutrients as you can. To help fight that metallic taste plaguing you during your first trimester, there are a few things that you can do to help greatly minimize it. Increasing your intake of more acidic foods such as citrus fruits and pickles can help naturally increase saliva production to wash away this taste. Another thing than many do, although it sounds silly, is giving yourself a good mouth cleansing with your favorite vegan toothpaste and mouthwash. Love trying new foods? Try recipes that are cold (like a delicious ice-cold smoothie) or spicy to “shock” your tastebuds and lessen the metallic taste. Did you experience tasting metal while eating during your pregnancy?
