Regardless of whether the ad was appropriate or not, toxic masculinity is real even if you wouldnât want to admit it. A positive post featuring Turia Pitt, an Australian mother, motivational speaker, and burn victim, received a lot of hurtful comments that will leave you questioning the lack of empathy in people these days. Are we becoming increasingly insensitive with each passing day? As I lay in my bed, scrolling through my social media feeds, I came across one such particularly inspiring love story of Turia Pitt. She is an Australian athlete with an engineering background, humanitarian, and author who overcame all the hurdles life threw at her in the form of a major fire accident that left her with third-degree burns. She survived catastrophic injuries while participating in an ultramarathon. A doting mother to her cute little son she lovingly named Hakavai, Turiaâs love story is as beautiful as her soul. Turia and her partner Michael Hoskinâs love story is an integral part of her inspirational survival and zeal to fight against the odds. They were living their life to the fullest up until September 2011, when a major fire during an ultramarathon turned their world upside down. Turia suffered third-degree burns to sixty-five percent of her body and was fighting hard to survive. She had to claw her way back into life after spending a grueling five months of recovery at the hospital. Michael gave up his job as a police officer to care for the love of his life who he had been with since high school. He surprised her with a ring when she was in intensive care. In Turiaâs own words, Michaelâs love was what kept her going even when she wanted to give up on life during the tumultuous ordeal. Inspiring, isnât it? Well not everyone thought so. In the perfect display of toxic masculinity, there were quite a lot of enlightened individuals who took some extra time out of their incredibly busy lives and left some beautiful comments on a post about the amazing couple.
