The American Pregnancy Association says that more than half of pregnant women will experience some form of nausea during their pregnancy. The name “morning sickness” can be a little misleading though, as nausea and vomiting can occur at any time of the day or night. For some pregnant women, this nauseous feeling can last well into the pregnancy, up to twenty weeks, while it can last throughout an entire pregnancy for others. Severe nausea and vomiting can lead to dehydration and brief hospitalizations, this is known as hyperemesis gravidarum. Fortunately for most women suffering from morning sickness, nausea and vomiting will subside when they enter the second trimester. Although there isn’t any one size fits all cure, there are a few things that you can try to ease the symptoms. I had morning sickness during all three of my pregnancies. The first two, it stopped right on cue on the first day of my fourteenth week. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was nauseous all day, every day, for a solid nine months. Personally, what worked for me wasn’t anything I’ve read in a pregnancy book. This was something that was suggested to me by my grandmother who’d had eight children of her own. She suggested smelling citrus fruit when I felt nauseous, specifically lemons. It worked like a charm for me. I walked around for months with lemons in my purse, and I’m sure people were looking at me funny every time I plucked one out and started sniffing it.
